New Transmission (Overhead View)
Alameda, California
November, 1990
Within days of the 283-to-350 engine swap, I loaded all my shit into the
car and left Orange County for good. 7 hours later, the Impala and
I were at our new home in the Bay Area. The 2-speed Powerglide automatic
was working fine, but it was too much of a dog, even with a 4-barrel 350
under the hood. Clearly it was time to move the car into the late
60s with the dime-a-dozen TH350 transmission. The TH350 was installed
in everything from Vegas to vans, so a cheap rebuilt unit was cheap and
easily obtained. The installation was a medium-sized pain in the
ass; some brackets needed fabricating to rig the Powerglide column shifter
to the new trans. Fortunately, the Powerglide is the same external
size as the TH350, so I didn't have to get a new driveshaft or crossmember.
