Christo's Umbrella
Grapevine, California
Late 1991
The rich-n-famous artist Christo set up what looked like thousands of these
huge yellow umbrellas along I-5 near the Grapevine. They were in
gas station parking lots, fields, hills, etc, for mile after mile.
As I recall, a woman was killed by one of the umbrellas when a high wind
lifted it up and slammed the heavy concrete base into her head. This
particular umbrella was located next to a Chevron in the town of Grapevine;
I convinced some tourists at the gas station that I had been hired by Christo
to drive up and down the highway to provide a more effective "interpretive
site."
