283 Block
Irvine, California
1992
After the Great Trailer Park Engine Swap of 1990 took place, the old 283
that was installed by the GM plant in Southgate, California, ended up in
the Irvine Meadows West RV Park "Sculpture Garden," an area behind the
trailers decorated with various "donated" (i.e., no room for them at home)
artworks. I felt that the 283 block was a fine work of art and, as
such, belonged in the Sculpture Garden. Here it is, two years after
being yanked from the Impala's engine compartment, rusthing quietly in
the weeds. Soon after this photo was taken, the 283 block was used
by the artist L. to help anchor his massive steel "Electric
Man" sculpture. The block remains in the sculpture garden to
this day, and can be viewed by anybody who can actually find the
trailer park on the UCI campus.
