Transmission #3
Alameda, California
January, 1999
The TH350 I put in back in 1991 never did want to shift into third under
load- I always had to baby it for the second-third shift. This was
a headache when climbing steep grades at highway speed, but it was a disaster
at the dragstrip. I had to back off to half-throttle with a few hundred
feet left to go on the quarter-mile. Luckily, I spotted this transmission
at the junkyard: a freshly-rebuilt TH350 (it was much cleaner than anything
else on the car, a fairly straight 6-cylinder '76 Chevelle with a dozen
San Francisco parking tickets still under the wipers). I put a shift
kit in it and it worked perfectly- even with a locker I can get plenty
of rubber going into second gear, and third is good and solid, too.
Once the rainy season is over, it's back to the dragstrip for me.
