That&#8217;s not how things worked out for <a href=\"http:\/\/jalopnik.com\/5040971\/vlad-the-impala-goes-down-with-garbooned-transmission-camry-parked-for-rest-of-day\">Vlad The Impala<\/a> at the first-ever 24 Hours of LeMons New England race. What went wrong? The members of Team El Toro Loco\u2014 and, in fact, just about <em>every<\/em> SHO team\u2014 know this! El Toro Loco blasted the engine on Saturday, but the team was able to find a replacement sitting in some dude&#8217;s driveway a few counties away. After cannibalizing the <em>other<\/em> dead SHOs for parts, TZT managed to return to the track after each seemingly-fatal mechanical failure. However, based on my observations of the entire Civic family in LeMons events, I think it&#8217;s a safe bet that multiple head gasket and\/or engine swaps were involved.<br \/>\n<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/murileemartin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hf-09buttonwillow-600px.jpg\" alt=\"hf-09buttonwillow-600px\" title=\"hf-09buttonwillow-600px\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/murileemartin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hf-09buttonwillow-600px.jpg 600w, https:\/\/murileemartin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hf-09buttonwillow-600px-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Buttonwillow Histrionics &#8217;09: Black Iron Racing: Beyond Thunderchrome<\/strong><br \/>\nBlack Iron Racing&#8217;s de-bodied BMW 540 <a href=\"http:\/\/jalopnik.com\/5338514\/and-the-peoples-curse-is-the-black-iron-racing-bmw-540\">won the People&#8217;s Curse<\/a> at Buttonwillow, and this time the destruction took the form of a mob of 120 dudes with one wrench apiece being allowed three minutes to dismantle the car. Somehow, Black Iron managed to get the car back into running condition within a few hours.<br \/>\n<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/murileemartin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hf-09southfall-600px.jpg\" alt=\"hf-09southfall-600px\" title=\"hf-09southfall-600px\" width=\"600\" height=\"489\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/murileemartin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hf-09southfall-600px.jpg 600w, https:\/\/murileemartin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hf-09southfall-600px-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>South Fall &#8217;09: Hong Norr<\/strong><br \/>\nHong Norr holds the current record for most engine swaps performed during a LeMons race: <em>five!<\/em> They&#8217;re Civic drag racers, and so they have a limitless stash of engines with nitrous-induced rod knocks in their trailer. Once they blew the good engine, they started in on the questionable engines. Ten minutes of racing, then KABOOM! No problem, plenty more engines where that came from! Repeat endlessly. Busted transaxles. Electrical problems. Then they spun <em>another<\/em> bearing, but did they give up? Hell no! Needless to say, the modifications necessary to get it in crypto-drivable condition&#8230; well, they sorta <em>compromised<\/em> the suspension and subframe rigidity. The car failed tech the first time. Then it failed tech another time. In fact, it failed tech about every wrenching-packed hour for the entire weekend, before Jay finally gave it the nod with exactly ten minutes before the final checkered flag. <em>One <\/em>lap&#8230; and a trophy. Guess what? The Wasserboxer isn&#8217;t a particularly reliable engine! Good thing the Morrow&#8217;s crew brought several air-cooled VW engines of unknown running condition, and they proceeded to swap one after the other into the pink kit car. What really earned them the HF was the carburetor adapter plate made from particle-board and the bottom half of the Wasserboxer&#8217;s throttle body coupled with throttle linkage made from a bicycle shifter cable, bungee cords, and lots of coat hanger wire.
