Leaving the Starting Line
Atlanta Raceway, Commerce, Georgia
December, 1995
The car in the left lane is already out of the frame, and I've only gone
30 feet. The best the car would do with the now-tired 70,000 mile
350 was 17.27 @78 mph. If this humiliating experience isn't enough
reason to start planning a new balls-to-the-wall engine, then you might
as well renounce your American citizenship and start driving a Hillman
Minx. Note the mottled "urban camoflauge" paint job; while working
as a copywriter for Year One, I always used
any free samples of primer (as long as it was gray or black) to touch up
any areas of the car where original (aqua) paint or rust was showing.
We got a lot of free cans of paint, too. Eventually, many
of my coworkers were heading out to the parking lot to test paint on my
car; I told them it was fine as long as they left the glass and lights
alone.
